Who may apply?
Answer 1:
We encourage students from all disciplines to apply. The program may especially appeal to the graduates of
Philosophy, Psychology, Linguistics, Language Teaching, Instructional Technology, Computer Science and various Engineering and Science departments.
Question 2:
What does the application process involve?
Answer 2:
Apply to the Graduate School of Informatics with an application form, transcripts, results of LES, references and a statement of purpose. The exact requirements should be checked through the Information Institute homepage. Typically candidates will be interviewed at a date to be announced by the Informatics Institute.
Question 3:
Which parts of the application are important?
Answer 3:
Three parts of the application are crucial: the student's academic record (i.e. the transcript), recommendation letters, and most importantly, the statement of purpose (i.e. the letter of intention).
Question 4:
What is a statement of purpose (i.e. the letter of intention)?
Answer 4:
A statement of purpose describes the intellectual issues and subjects which a student hopes to explore at the Cogsci Department.
Question 5:
What kind of information should I include in the statement of purpose?
Answer 5:
Research interests and the reasons why one wants to study at the Cogsci Department should be stated. It is of benefit to the student to be as specific as possible in describing research interests. General comments are of relatively little use.
Question 6:
What will be the content of the interview?
Answer 6:
The interview usually consists of specific questions about the candidate's research interests.
Question 7:
Can I start the program in the Spring term?
Answer 7:
Usually, we accept applications for the PhD program in the spring term. Please visit the Informatics Institute News in January about the application process for the spring term.

Is research assistanship offered?
Answer 8:
Research assistantships are rarely offered. Whenever a position is available, it is announced in Informatics and/or Cognitive Science News.
