Applying to Informatics Institute
Health sciences and medicine are one of the prominent application areas of information and technology. Measurement and imaging methods, testing, analysis and patient monitoring instruments are developing and increasing in numbers at a very fast pace. As a result, health information is getting richer and information collected from patients is increasing at a very fast rate. The importance of information technologies in adopting the research results into practice is indispensable, under the circumstances of the expanding pace of research conducted in medicine.
Aim and Philosophy
The objectives of the Medical Informatics graduate program are as follows:
- To provide the specialists/researchers working in all health sectors with the necessary knowledge and experience to carry out their work effectively.
- To train academicians/researchers.
- To conduct inter-disciplinary scientific research.
- To bring together researchers from other disciplines to the field of Medical Informatics.
Career Opportunities
Health and Medical Informatics offer very broad and diverse employment opportunities. Public and private sectors, and academic institutions are in immediate need of graduates of this program. Some examples are information technology companies developing/supporting software, the IT-management and quality management departments of all hospitals and health providers, clinical managers, health insurance firms, nursing services management, city health offices and many other health organizations. In addition, various projects supported by international financial firms need specialists from this field. Government based Social Security institutions are also potential employers of such specialists.
M.S. in Medical Informatics
Medical Informatics Department offers a master program for students. This program also provides interdisciplinary training and obligates specialization in one of the four tracks: HIS and Clinical Informatics, Medical Image/Signal Analysis, Medical Decision Support, Neuroscience.
Degree Requirements
The master program has two options: Thesis and Non-Thesis option. In the option with thesis, students must take three core courses, five elective courses, one non-credit seminar and write a master thesis. For the Non-Thesis option, 2 more elective courses must be taken and a term project must be submitted instead of thesis.
Ph.D. in Medical Informatics
The Ph.D. Program in Medical Informatics aims to train academicians / researchers, to do inter-disciplinary scientific research, and to bring together the researchers from a multitude of disciplines in Medical Informatics field. Students should choose one of the tracks and complete the offered courses for each track. Specialization Areas in the program are:
Degree Requirements
The students accepted to the program, must complete their scientific background requirements. By the end of the first year, all students have to choose one of the 3 specialization areas above. In order to graduate, students must take three core courses, ten elective courses, one non-credit seminar course and write a Ph.D. thesis.
For Students Coming From a Non-Health Field:
- BIS 605/735 Biostatistics
- TEB 601 Medical Terminology
- TEB 602 Introduction to Basic Medical Sciences (or TEB 603 Introduction to Clinical Medical Sciences) courses are obligatory.
For Students Coming From Health and Medicine Field:
- CENG 230 Introduction to Computers and Programming
- MAT 157 Basic Calculus
- STAT 201 Introduction to Probability & Statistics courses are obligatory.
Academic Activities
International Symposium on Health Informatics and Bioinformatics (HIBIT)
This conference was initiated in 2005 with the following objectives:
- to start a series of high quality international conferences in Turkey in this subject area
- to bring together the research community in Turkey and in other countries,
- to support young researchers in the area
- to get together with the industry for further cooperation.
The first HIBIT held in November 2005, with participants from more than 10 different countries. Enthusiasm among the participants, keynote speakers and students was great. This year’s conference was announced to a very large international crowd, including universities, centers and hospitals.
Fifth HIBIT conference will be held on April 20-22, 2010, Belek, Antalya, Turkey.

Cutting Edge Science in Medical Informatics and Medicine
These meetings aim to discuss the latest advances in
- bioinformatics
- biotechnology
- medicine
In addition, these meetings are held to discuss opportunities for starting joint programs, academic staff and student exchange, and doing joint research projects and interdisciplinary studies between the Middle East Technical University, Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Comments From Students
Sait Can YÜCEBAŞ (PhD Student):
"My father is a doctor. As a result, I was always interested in medicine. During my master, I studied medical decision support systems. Medical Informatics, being in the intersection of medical sciences and engineering is the exact program that I was looking for. Use of technology in health field is a process that has fallen behind in the whole world. Via this program, we take courses and participate in projects related with medicine and engineering fields and try to fix this inefficiency. Briefly, the major advantage is gaining the necessary qualifications requested all over the world. I have gained a lot from the projects and courses. Important thing is to convey the information gained from this program to society by future works and applications and contribute to the improvements of our country within this field." more...
