Modelleme ve Simülasyon, bilişim teknolojilerinin karmaşık ve yoğun hesaplama gerektiren problemleri temel alan uygulamalar için uygun maliyetli yazılım ve donanım çözümlerine olanak sağlamasıyla, son yıllarda oldukça popüler olmuş ve önem kazanmıştır. MODSİM, otomotiv, havacılık ve savunma gibi birçok sektörde önemli bir etkiye sahiptir. Özellikle, modelleme ve simülasyonun uygulama alanları karmaşık sistemlerin ve cihazların eğitim, analiz, tasarım ve edinimini kapsamaktadır. Diğer alanlar, son zamanlarda daha çok araştırma merkezleri ve üniversitelerde daha fazla üzerinde çalışılan eğlence ve oyun uygulamalarını içermektedir. Bazı gelişmiş ülkeler bu alanı, bu teknolojinin maksimum kullanımını sağlayacak bazı eylemlerin uygun yatırımlarla planlandığı ulusal bir kritik teknoloji alanı olarak kabul etmektedir. Bu alandaki kalkınma ve ilerleme, yüksek eğitim sisteminde modelleme ve simülasyonun geliştirilmesini ve, modelleme ve simülasyon iş gücünün ayrı sınıflandırılmasını gerektirmektedir. Türkiye'deki tek modelleme ve simülasyon bölümü olarak, bu alanı öğrencilerimizin mezuniyetinden sonra endüstri ve araştırma projelerinde yer almaları için hazırlamak amacıyla öğrencilerimize modern teknik bilgiler sunarak desteklemeyi hedeflemekteyiz. Son on yıl içerisinde, şu anda büyük ölçekli ve kritik MODSİM projelerinde çalışmakta olan 60'dan fazla MODSİM uzmanı mezun ettik. Bölüm, MODSİM Yüksek Lisans programında eğitim ve araştırmanın kalitesini sağlamak amacıyla, prensiplerine yakından bağlıdır.

Bununla birlikte, Bilgisayar Oyunları hakkında yeni bir Yüksek Lisans programı geliştirdik. Bilgisayar Oyunları, araştırma ve geliştirme konusunda MODSİM ile birçok ortak görüşü paylaşan, gelecek vaadeden ve ilgi çekici bir alandır. Teknik sorunlara ve potansiyel pazar hacmine bağlı olarak, öğrencilerin bilgisayar oyun teknolojilerini çalışması cazip hale gelmiştir. Modelleme ve Simülasyon Bölümü, 2009 Sonbahar Dönemi itibariyle Oyun Teknolojileri Yüksek Lisans programına öğrenci kabul edecektir. MODSİM Y.L. programı süresince kazanılan deneyim ve bilgi, bu ilgi çekici ve gelecek vaadeden özel alana transfer edilecektir. Bu programda kazanılan bilgi ve deneyim, çevrimiçi oyun, resmi oyun, test metodolojileri, büyük ölçekli gerçek zamanlı oyunlar, oyunda görsel gerçeklik ve oyun sanatını içeren geniş bir bilgisayar oyun spektrumunda üretilecek ve yayılacaktır. Ayrıca, kültür, oyun hikayelerini oluşturan bir kaynak olan hizmet ettiğinden, daha önce değinilmemiş tarihsel hikayeleriyle dünyadaki en eski ve zengin kültürlerden birisi olan Türk kültürü, Oyun Teknolojileri Y. L. Programı'nda çalışılan projelerde kullanılacaktır.

Çeşitli disiplinlerden tüm araştırmacıları, eğitim, araştırma ve geliştirme sürecinde MODSİM ve Oyun Teknolojileri'nin bu heyecan verici dünyasında yer almaları için davet ediyoruz.

ODTÜ'de MODSİM

Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi'nde (ODTÜ) yer alan Modelleme ve Simülasyon Bölümü (MODSİM), 1999 yılında Enformatik Enstitüsü bünyesinde kurulmuştur. Modelleme ve Simülasyon alanında bir Yüksek Lisans (Y. L.) derecesi sunmaktadır. MODSİM Y. L. programı, ODTÜ'nün ilk ikinci öğretim programıdır. Y.L. derecesi sunan Türkiye'deki ilk ve tek Modelleme ve Simülasyon programıdır.

MODSİM bölümü, Yöneylem Araştırma Modellemesi, Görsel Ortamlar ve Bilgisayar Simülasyonu alanlarına odaklanan disiplinlerarası araştırmalar yürütmektedir. MODSİM, öğrencileri çeşitli disiplinlerde yeterli birikim ile eğitmeyi amaçlamaktadır ve mesleki çalışmalarla birlikte bir akademik kariyeri takip edecek araştırmacılar için düşünülmüştür. Bu anlamda, ODTÜ'nün diğer ilgili bölümleriyle birlikte Enformatik Enstitüsü'nün diğer programları, MODSİM lisansüstü programına katkı sağlamaktadır.

Modelleme ve Simülasyon Yüksek Lisans

MODSIM eğitim programı modelleme ve simülasyon yeteneklerini geliştirmek ve entegre etmek ile birlikte, bu yeteneklerin görsel ortamlara uygulanması amacıyla tasarlanmıştır. Programın amaçları:

Modelleme ve Simülasyon Yüksek Lisans Programı

MODSIM eğitim programı modelleme ve simülasyon yeteneklerini geliştirmek ve entegre etmek ile birlikte, bu yeteneklerin görsel ortamlara uygulanması amacıyla tasarlanmıştır. Programın amaçları:

• modelleme ve simülasyon alanında disiplinlerarası araştırma yapmaya teşvik etmek ve desteklemek,
• savunma sanayi, özel ve kamu sektörlerindeki modelleme ve simülasyon gereksinimlerini karşılamaktır.

Modelleme ve Simülasyon tezsiz bir programdır ve mesleki çalışanlar için hazırlanmıştır. Bilimsel hazırlık programı sunulmamaktadır ve 2 temel çalışma alanı sunmaktadır: Karar Modelleri ve Görsel Mekan. Her bir çalışma alanında müfredat programında tanımlandığı gibi temel gereksinimler, zorunlu dersler ve seçmeli dersler vardır. Öğrencilerin programı 5 dönemde tamamlamaları beklenmektedir. Bu programa kayıtlı öğrenciler, kayıt oldukları her dönemde aldıklar ders kredisi sayısına bağlı olarak ders ücreti öderler. Kredi saatine bağlı ders ücreti miktarı her akademik yılın başında belirlenmektedir.

The MODSIM curriculum is designed to develop and integrate modeling and simulation skills with special emphasis on application of these skills in virtual environments. The objectives of the program are: to foster and support interdisciplinary research in the field of modeling and simulation, to meet the modeling and simulation needs of the defense industry, and public and private sectors

M.S. in Modeling and Simulation

The MODSIM curriculum is designed to develop and integrate modeling and simulation skills with special emphasis on application of these skills in virtual environments. The objectives of the program are:

• to foster and support interdisciplinary research in the field of modeling and simulation,
• to meet the modeling and simulation needs of the defense industry, and public and private sectors

Modeling and Simulation is a non-thesis program and mainly intended for working professionals. It has no deficiency program and has two tracks: Decision Models and Virtual Environments. Each track has background requirements, core courses, and elective courses as defined in the curricula. Students are expected to complete the program in 5 semesters. Students enrolled in this program pay a tuition fee based on the number of credit hours they register for every semester. The amount of tuition fee per credit hour is determined at the beginning of every academic year.

The Modeling and Simulation Department (MODSIM) at Middle East Technical University (METU) was established in 1999 within the Informatics Institute. It offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Modeling and Simulation. MODSIM M.S. program is the first second education program of METU. It is the first and the only Modeling and Simulation program in Turkey that offers an M.S. degree. MODSIM department conducts interdisciplinary research focusing on Operations Research Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Computer Simulation. MODSIM aims at educating students with sufficient background in various disciplines, and is intended mainly for those who will work as professionals as they pursue an academic career. In this manner, other programs of the Informatics Institute as well as related departments of METU contribute to the MODSIM graduate curriculum.

From the Head of the Department

Modeling and Simulation (MODSIM) has become more popular and important in recent years since information technologies has resulted in cost effective software and hardware solutions for applications that rely on complex and computationally intensive problems.  MODSIM has a great impact on many sectors, such as automotive, aircraft and defense. More specifically, the application areas of modeling and simulation include training, analysis, design and acquisition of complex systems and devices. Other areas include entertainment and serious gaming, which were studied more at research centers and universities in the last decade. Some developed countries have accepted this area as a national critical technology for which some actions with appropriate investments have been planned to make maximum use of this technology. The progress in this area requires the enhancement of modeling and simulation within higher education and separate classification of modeling and simulation occupations. As the only modeling and simulation department in Turkey, we aim to support this area by providing state-of-the art knowledge to our students to prepare them for involvement in industrial and research projects after graduation. Within the last decade, we have graduated more than 60 MODSIM experts who now work on large size and critical MODSIM projects. In order to ensure quality of the education and the research in MODSIM M.S. program, the department closely adheres to its principals.

Furthermore, we developed a new M.S. program on Computer Gaming. Computer Gaming is a promising and challenging area which shares many common aspects with MODSIM regarding research and development. Due to the technical challenges and potential market size, students are attracted to studying computer gaming technologies. The Modeling and Simulation Department will accept students to the Game Technologies M.S. program starting from Fall 2009. The experience and the knowledge accumulated through MODSIM M.S. program will be transferred to this attractive and promising specific area. In this program, knowledge will be produced and disseminated in a large spectrum of computer gaming, including online gaming, serious gaming, testing methodologies, massively multiplayer online games, virtual reality in gaming, and art of gaming.  Additionally, as culture serves as a source to derive game stories, the Turkish culture, being one of the oldest and the richest in the world with untouched historical stories, will be utilized in the projects studied in the Game Technologies M.S. Program.
